Jennie Hawley

Biography: 

Contralto Jennie Hawley was a dashing comic opera performer of the turn of the 20th century. Though a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, and despite debuting there as Lazarillo in 1889, she emerged as a talent in 1896 with the Bostonian's troupe, and was seen by many during the tours of Victor Herbert's "The Fortune Teller" by Adelaide Nielsen's Opera Company. In the 1900-01 season she became a name performer with the success of "Hodge Podge." In 1903 she was leading woman with Francis Wilson. But her career did not prosper long. Her name became a memory sometime around 1906. David S. Shields/ALS
