Barney Williams

Biography:

(1823-1876)

Irish actor and vocalist Barney Williams emerged out of the world of minstrelsy to become a stage Irish comedian. Teamed with wife Maria Pray, he rose to popularity on both coasts in Lover's comic opera "Rory O'More" or as Pat in Amerherst's "Ireland as it Is." His early poverty made him careful with money, and by the 1860s he had amassed a fortune. David S. Shields/ALS
